今日ご紹介する英語表現は、keep one's eyes open（十分に気をつける；油断なく気を配る）です。

英語の文字通りの意味は、「目を見開いておく」ですね。

Macmillan Dictionary では keep your eyes open/peeled/skinned (for) の項目で
to keep looking for someone or something that you hope to find
例：Keep your eyes open for a petrol station.
（ガソリンスタンドがないか注意してて）
・・・と紹介していました。

また、Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary では、keep your eyes open の項目で
or keep your eyes peeled or Brit keep your eyes skinned
informal : to look or watch closely in order to see or find (something)
例：We kept our eyes peeled for a sign that would tell us where to turn.
（私たちはどこで曲がればよいか、標識に気をつけた）
・・・と紹介しています。informal な表現とありますね。

二つの辞書の例文いずれも、うしろに来る前置詞は for になっています。

ではメディアでは、どのように使われているでしょうか？

テクノロジーなどの話題を主に配信する Gizmodo（ギズモード）英語版の記事で使われていましたので、一例としてご紹介します。記事の一番最後の段落で使われています。

"Other than all this, and unless something extraordinary happens, you shouldn't worry about the world ending tomorrow. It won't. But keep your eyes open for auroras happening near you."

以前、Hearts in Atlantis （邦題：アトランティスのころ）という作品をDVDで見たことがあります。作品中、Anthony Hopkins （アンソニー・ホプキンス）演じる Ted （テッド） が少年に Keep your eyes open. と伝えるセリフがありました。この作品は人生の限られた一時期である「少年時代」を回顧する物語で、テッドと少年のやり取りを見ながら、「ああ、その感覚は小学生のときにはあったなあ・・・」と考えさせられることしきりでした。もし今後、本作をご覧になる方は、Keep your eyes open. がどこで出てくるか、楽しみにしていてくださいね！

＊余談となりますが・・・この作品には、"Books can be solid gold." というセリフが出てきます。本に携わる仕事をしている私にとっては、心から賛同する言葉です。

今日ご紹介する英語表現は、at the drop of a hat（すぐさま；ためらわずに）です。

文字通りの意味は、「帽子が落ちて」ですね。

Macmillan Dictionary では、
immediately, or in a way that shows that you have no doubts about doing something
例：You can’t just resign at the drop of a hat.
（すぐさま退職することはできませんよ）
・・・と紹介していました。

Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary では、
very quickly and immediately
例1：He says he's ready to help us at the drop of a hat.
（彼はすぐに私たちを助ける準備があると言う）
例2：She loses her temper at the drop of a hat.
（彼女はすぐにカッとなる）
・・・と紹介しています。

では、メディアではどのように使われているでしょうか？二つのケースをご紹介します。

まずは、The New York Times のオンライン記事です。Broadway のショーに出演中の Condola Rashad （コンドラ・ラシャド）という役者の発言で使われています。

"You know how there’s always the one girl in drama school who can cry at the drop of a hat? She has that emotional well she can tap into in a second? I’m not that girl. It takes a lot to get me to that place."

続いて、イギリスの新聞 The Guardian （ガーディアン）より、スコットランド独立についての記事です。

ここでは、leave England at the drop of a hat （すぐさまイングランドを去る）とあります。

［補足］Bannockburn（バノックバーン）とは地名です。どんな意味合いを持つ街かは、goo!辞書のサイトが参考になります。
→ 英国スコットランド中部の都市スターリング南郊の村。ロバート1世率いるスコットランド軍が、エドワード2世のイングランド軍を破り独立を勝ち取った、13世紀の「バノックバーンの戦い」の舞台として知られる。スコットランド独立の経緯を紹介する資料館がある。

【復習編】

先週末、映画 Spanglish （邦題：スパングリッシュ 太陽の国から来たママのこと）や、Hitch （邦題：最後の恋をはじめ方）のDVDを借りて鑑賞しました。これまでブログでご紹介した英語表現がたくさん出てきましたので、復習編としてご紹介しますね。

今日ご紹介する英語表現は、see the light of day（日の目を見る；世に出る）です。

文字通りの意味は「日の光を見る」ですね。

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary では、
to become publicly known or available (as through publication)
例：manuscripts that will never see the light of day
（決して日の目を見ないであろう原稿）
・・・と紹介していました。

Longman English Dictionary Online では、
（a）if an object sees the light of day, it is taken from the place where it has been hidden, and becomes publicly known
例：Some of these documents will probably never see the light of day.
（これらの書類の中には、決して日の目を見ないものもあろう）
（b）if a law, decision etc sees the light of day, it comes into existence for the first time
・・・と2つの定義を紹介しています。

また、Oxford Dictionaries Online では、
be born; begin to exist or to become publicly known or available
例：This software first saw the light of day back in 1993.
（このソフトウェアが最初に日の目を見たのは1993年であった）
・・・と紹介しています。

これらの例文を見ると、原稿や書類、商品などとセットで使われていることが分かります。では、メディアでは、どのように使われているでしょうか？

一例として、イギリスの Financial Times （フィナンシャル・タイムズ）紙のオンライン記事で使われていたケースをご紹介します。

＊ここでは、tablets（タブレット）が引き合いに出されています。

英語では see the light of day と light（光）が使われますが、日本語では「日の目を見る」のように、「日の目」という表現をしますよね。英語圏と日本語圏で、似たような概念があるのが興味深いです。

長い冬の間、雪の下に埋もれていたタネが、春になって芽を出し太陽の光をいっぱい浴びるように、仕事も何事も、see the light of day を目指して、日々のコツコツを積み重ねたいと思います。
